In the sport of elite gymnastics, the true measure of greatness comes down to fractions of a point awarded by a panel of judges. It is a sport where the most important element is one that can’t be replicated in training: competition. For a year, Olympic contenders have been denied that aspect of preparation due to coronavirus protocols and precautions that closed gyms and canceled virtually all international events. That changed this weekend in Indianapolis as a field of top U.S. athletes hit the mat at Winter Cup.

The annual Winter Cup, also known as the Nastia Liukin Cup and Elite Team Cup, features men’s and women’s senior and junior artistic gymnastics. It is the first domestic meet on the Olympic road, and performances at the event can impact selection for multiple international assignments this season.

USA Gymnastics announced on Wednesday that the 2024 edition of the meet, which will take place Feb. 23-25 at the Kentucky International Convention Center in Louisville, will include both the senior and junior men’s and women’s competitions. The 2024 Winter Cup will serve as the first stop on the U.S. path to the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

On the senior side, USA Gymnastics will be using this event to determine its initial 2020 U.S. Senior National Team, which will be comprised of the top six all-around performers from prelims and the best three women’s and two men’s individual all-around competitors. Athletes will compete in three rotations on each day of the competition and must earn a minimum score of 6.7 to qualify for an all-around final.

A total of 425 athletes are expected to compete in the 2024 Winter Cup, which is also scheduled to feature the Elite Team Cup and Nastia Liukin Cup (formerly known as Supergirl) competitions. It will be the second time that the Winter Cup has been held in Louisville, having previously been hosted at Freedom Hall in the Kentucky International Convention Center in 2010-2011.

Navy sophomore Isaiah Drake took to the mat at the 2023 Winter Cup and delivered on his promise, leading all collegiate men on the pommel horse, parallel bars and high bar. The Midshipmen’s top all-arounder and vault specialist has a strong chance to earn a spot in the upcoming U.S. Olympic Trials for the men’s elite squad.

The meet kicked off Friday with a pair of qualifying rounds, and the top eight in each of the three disciplines advanced to the finals. Twenty-seven gymnasts competed in the finals, and seven clinched a spot on the 2023 U.S. Olympic roster. The men’s final is scheduled for 5 p.m. ET Saturday, and the women’s final is set for 5:30 p.m. Sunday.
