A Quick Look at Some Common Gymnastics Terms

When you watch gymnastics, especially when you first begin, you might not understand all of the gymnastics terms that are used. It can be very helpful to look at a glossary before you get into the nitty gritty of learning each skill or routine. Some of the terms that are most commonly used are listed below.

The first gymnastics terms that you will learn are the scores. This is simply the score that you are given after a certain level has been reached. For example, if you are executing a cartwheel on the apparatus and you only have one extra step, you will receive a score of eight. If you execute it perfectly and you add an extra step, you will receive a score of sixteen. This is how difficult the skill is.

The second term that you will learn is the scoreline. Just like the name states, this is the line that separates winners from losers in gymnastics. These scores are used in many different divisions throughout a gymnastics league, and sometimes throughout every division if a tournament is being held.

Another term that might be helpful to look at is the hanging position. The hanging position is what is typically called a floor routine in gymnastics. You do this by laying flat on your stomach with your elbows resting under your legs and your hands forming a “T” shape. You then have to use your legs to pull yourself up so that you are hanging from the ground. This is considered to be a power move in gymnastics.

The last term we will cover is the balance beam. This is a very important skill that should be mastered by any gymnast. A balance beam is simply where the gymnast is standing with one foot in front of the other, toes pointed down the floor. You then hold onto the balancing post with your arms crossed behind your head. You then have to bring yourself back up to the starting point and repeat. This can be done in a variety of different angles, all of which are used in different competition.

As you can see, learning these gymnastic terms will help you tremendously when you are first starting out in the sport of gymnastics. As you master more complex skills, you will find that you will need to have a little bit more of an understanding of how the gymnastics moves work. For example, the jump rope is not the same as a tumbling tower. Once a gymnast becomes very advanced with their skills, they will probably want to learn more about each of the individual moves.
