American Girl dolls have been around for over a century and are still popular among young girls. The company has been praised for the positive self-image and sense of inclusion that their products foster in girls. The catalog even includes options for wheelchairs, hearing aids and allergy-friendly lunch kits. Now, a new line of accessories will teach kids about accepting differences as well. The new American Girl Doll Hospital will include everything from a walker to a wheelchair, with the items priced between $14 and $38.
The first set features the McKenna doll. She’s 18 inches tall and has brilliant blue eyes that open and close, and long caramel hair that can be swept up for gymnastics or styled in fancy twists. Her get-well kit has all the supplies she needs to heal from her injury and continue training for her next competition. It includes a faux cast with a heartfelt note from her friends and family, pink crutches, a stretchy bandage, and a cute stuffed panda to help lift her spirits.
Another great gift idea is the McKenna’s Practice Leotard and Spectator Set. This outfit is perfect for when she’s practicing for her next competition and needs to feel confident and strong. It comes with a matching pair of shoes, and a pink leotard that is designed to look like the kind worn in a gymnastics competition. A pink bow completes the look.
Lila’s Story of a Horse Loving Girl is a great addition to the collection and teaches girls about goal setting. It’s a great way to show that your goals can be about more than just gymnastics or trophies, but they can also be about friendships and other interests, such as horseback riding. It also teaches that sometimes you need to let go of one goal to make time for another.
While it’s great that the American Girl brand is trying to address a wide range of issues with their dolls, I do wish they could include more themes in their Girl of the Year collection. For example, there have only been two dolls with a gymnastics theme out of 22 GOTYs, and they were spaced apart by 12 years. But, I guess it’s good that more of these kinds of activities are being represented in the GOTY line in terms of outfits and accessories. Other hobbies, such as Girl Scouts, hockey, soccer and musical instruments have also been represented in this way over the years. I think the company is on the right track though, and hopefully more and more themes will be added in the future.
