Did You Know This About Gymnastics Quiz Buzzfeed

The New Yorker once reported that a single error in a vault routine can cost a gymnast a lot of points. So, if you want to blow your friends’ minds when you show up with a ridiculous tumbling set, you might have to brush up on the Code of Points. And you might also have to make sure your leotard fits correctly. Visible underwear can result in major deductions. That’s partly why, as Buzzfeed notes, each female Olympic gymnast gets multiple fittings for her custom-made, nontransparent leotard, plus a matching set of matching underwear (bras and briefs) so she can look absolutely flawless.

During competition, each gymnast receives two scores: a difficulty score and an execution score. The former, aka the D-score, starts at zero and adds up as each of a gymnast’s hard-earned skills is successfully completed. The latter, aka the E-score, starts at 10 and subtracts points for mistakes like wobbles and falls.

But there’s a third category of deductions called penalties, which doesn’t have anything to do with difficulty or how the gymnast looks. And these are the kind of deductions you’ll see if, for instance, a gymnast steps out of bounds or goes over her time limit on floor or beam.
