The gymnastics winter cup 2021 results show the top-ranked junior and senior men and women from the first competition of the season. While the meet won’t have much bearing on the makeup of the Olympic teams — which are limited to five gymnasts per gender, plus one alternate — it will provide important clues about who is on track to shine at nationals in June and at the Olympics three weeks later.
The event, which begins Friday and concludes Sunday, is the first time that elite U.S. gymnasts will compete this season following USA Gymnastics’ cancellation of its 2020 premier events in response to the pandemic. Among other things, it will determine the composition of the men’s and women’s National Team for 2023, and serve as a qualifier to the Olympic games.
It’s also a chance for athletes to shake off the rust and gauge their progress ahead of the summer championships. Some of the biggest names will be there, including Olympians Yul Moldauer and Donnell Whittenburg, world medalists Skye Blakely and Addison Fatta, and junior world champions Elle Mueller and Lexi Zeiss. The field could also include senior all-around medalist Jordan Chiles, who is currently competing for her college team and preparing for NCAA gymnastics nationals, as well as last year’s senior world silver medalists Leanne Wong and Shilese Jones.
In the senior division, all current National Team members who will be age-eligible for the 2023 men’s and women’s national teams, as well as those who earned a spot to Day 2 of Winter Cup last year based on their two-day total, are pre-qualified to compete in this weekend’s meet. All other competitors must earn a place to compete through the U.S. Gymnastics Championships, which take place June 3-6 in Fort Worth.
NBC will broadcast live coverage of the men’s and women’s competition, while live streaming of all other sessions is available on the USA Gymnastics website. In addition, a special livestream of podium training sessions will be available on nbcsports.com, and fans can follow along with a full scoreboard on the event page of USAGym’s website.
For those not able to attend the event, the live stream will be available through a free mobile app for iOS and Android devices, as well as the WatchESPN app. To access the app, visit the Apple App Store or Google Play Store and search for “USA Gymnastics.” Fans who choose to purchase tickets through Ticketmaster will initially be charged the adult price and must manually select the youth option at checkout in order to complete their transaction.
The 2023 Winter Cup will also be used to select the men’s and women’s National Teams for the upcoming spring season, which includes the Jesolo Trophy in Italy; DTB Pokal Team Challenge and Mixed Cup in Stuttgart, Germany; and City of Jesolo Trophy in Jesolo, Italy. The final rosters for these international meets will be compiled at the conclusion of Winter Cup, with the top-five athletes from both the senior and junior disciplines earning spots.
